HOW ROHR REACTED TO NWAKALI’S GOAL

By Clement Nwankpa Jr

If his gesticulations are to be taken seriously, Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr may have been won over by Arsenal midfielder, Kelechi Nwakali as Eagles B lost 2-3 to Atletico Madrid in the Gotv Max Cup reports naijasportsgrill.com.ng.

This reporter was sitting behind Rohr at the VIP box of the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo while the match lasted.

Rohr was sitting beside his scout Tunde Adelakun.

When Nwakali sold a dummy and finished exquisitely from long distance, Rohr and the rest of the Super Eagles Team A players seated at the VIP gave him a standing ovation.

Then Rohr was playfully hitting Adelakun and pointing at the pitch as if saying; “why didn’t you tell me more about this lad? I should have added him in that (Provisional) list”.

The Franco-German was obviously thrilled by not just the quality of the goal, but the lad’s overall performance.

Given Rohr’s body language, it will be a surprise if the former U-17 national team captain doesn’t make his first post World Cup list.

Adelakun must brace up for more tasking assignments from his boss. He is going to be saddled with keeping tabs on the kid.

NFF had wanted to feature an entirely home-based team but Rohr insisted that fringe foreign-based players be included. Even for the home-based lads, he was insistent on younger players he hadn’t seen much about.

He has a two year extension on his deal with the Federation and wanted to catch a glimpse of what the future looked like.

The players paraded against Atletico may be nowhere near the main team now, but those that excelled could get accelerated integration into Team A.

Rohr’s Eagles are young but he plans to even introduce younger players after the World Cup. He believes the World Cup is a long-term project and plans for the 2022 edition should begin now. Hence the need to introduce the younger players early enough so they could properly settle in before the next World Cup.
